An account of the resource
Name: Adriean Edwards
Occupation: Heartland Alliance FSS (Family Self-Sufficiency) Program
Location: Chicago
"I had to do the unemployment, go online and do all of that, set up everything for her because she didn’t have a computer at home and she was having problems doing it over the phone. And I've heard those stories from my co-workers as well. And then you know, the different organizations and communities were closed, so it was literally nowhere they can go to physically to get help, and not being able to get through on the phone to unemployment and all of the other social service agencies, that was a huge thing for a couple of months in our program and just us trying to help our participants and navigate through that.
I've had a participant literally on the phone crying with me, saying that, you know, she works for the United Center. And the United Center has been closed for quite some time. And she's the breadwinner for her families for her children or grandchildren are living with her. And she was literally crying like, “I don't know, I'm just I don't know what to do, where to begin.” She was steadily calling for a job; the job wasn't responded to back to her. So, you know, they were in need of food. And I spoke with her last week and she said she had went to a church and she said that church had given her so much food. She said, “my cabinets are full, Adriean.” She was just like; she was overwhelmed, so it overwhelmed me, you know, to hear that. "

How can we control the world without being unfair? Can we stop this? Can we contain this so we make them do this? I think we just lab rats and they go they basically just a big spell to see how people will react. And in a time of need or a time of fear when they do this, what they do is or what they do that they take notes or. More on our economy. Have people living like this really just take notes in case they need they need to shed their underwear or they need to contain the situation? "

As the Property Manager for the Town Hall Apartments I am responsible to meet the housing needs of my 79 residents, as well as insuring the building remains in good condition. Serendipity definitely brought me to Heartland and specifically to manager Town Hall. I came out of the closet in 2016, returned to Chicago and was given the job of managing a building that is occupied by at least 55 LGBTQ+ seniors. It's truly the best group of residents and best building I've managed in my 30 years in the industry. Everyday I learn from my residents what they have had to endure to bring me the rights I have today.

Occupation: Manages Properties for LGBTQ Senior Friendly Housing

"So on a personal level, I think, you know, the first part of it was so surreal, like the idea of just even self quarantining on my own and feeling very isolated. And also Chicago became like a ghost town. You're dealing with five million people here in just the city of Chicago, and you rarely see a car on the street. You rarely see anybody on the sidewalks at the parks. I continued to go into the office three days a week and I was often the only person on my EL car, my train car. So I took a lot of pictures of just me there. And that was surreal. So you saw the city shut down.
And that's also a very controversial program because there's constant protests against Heartland for providing that service to unaccompanied children. They feel like we are in bed with the Trump administration, which is the farthest from the truth. We can never be, we offered to take them. And it is using the funding of the relocation, the refugee and relocation money that's available. And we, the average time a child stays in those homes is 30 days because we reunite them either with family that already exists here in the States or a foster family. And then they are moved out of those areas. If we did not conduct this program, more children would be in cages at Texas border. And that's basically where the other unaccompanied children have been placed and have been put in cages, literally. "

The topic of the resource
Jonathan is an editorial photographer originally from Los Angeles and currently making his home in Chicago. His personal projects often focus on groups of people, cultural behavior, societal issues and occasionally puppets. He has a strong technical background in photography, video, lighting, and photographic problem solving. He has experience working globally in communities where he is an outsider, and where he’s able to convey that he is an ally and looking to make work with them, not about them.
Describing his work in general, Jonathan explains his process as a commitment towards getting to know people. It’s about building relationships, trust, and sharing ideas and hearing ideas from others. He believes it is important to find people who are not just willing but eager to collaborate. Jonathan believes that it’s critical for the work to circulate within the communities with whom he works – it’s not enough to be an observer and make work about a community, but rather work should be made for and with a community.

"I was pretty dependent on having access to the programs and there was only a couple of people that I was kind of interacting with outside of the programs. And even then, that’s like the first it was like March, April, even into May. I would have March, April, all of May was just like nothing--completely shut down from the point we did lockdowns here in Chicago through the end of May, at least, maybe even into June, where just nothing was going on. I could basically talk to a couple of people via email or online, and everyone was busy and everyone was busy with their lives falling apart.
I do a lot of event work, like a lot of event photography and that all just Poof disappeared. I think I lost...just under ten thousand dollars of work that was already scheduled on the books for like a month and a half or two months, and that's not even accounting for the--for the work that would have popped up that people would have emailed me for in June, July and August, that they would have had things so.
Everyone suddenly needed me to do a lot of art documentation and video work for some museums and for individual artists and stuff so I've been actually pretty busy in the last--not March, April, May. June, July, I started getting busy again. But but with other work, different work. "
